Vietnam’s pottery Industry originated thousands years ago with famous names such as: Bat Trang in Hanoi, Tho Ha, Phu Lang in Bac Ninh province, Chu Dau in Hai Duong, Huong Canh in Vinh Phuc, Bo Bat in Thanh Hoa, ...
It is said that ceramic products are the harmonious combination of Yin – Yang and five basic elements (metal, wood, water, fire and earth). Ceramic production requires a lot of hard work and following steps:

1. Making clay and glaze: Main materials for ceramic products are clay, kaolin, firewood and enamel. Clay is soaked in water for 3 or 4 months, then cleaned to remove impurities. After that it will be made soft & well-kneaded, ready for shape by hand on the turning table. Glaze creation is a secret. Its materials include minerals such as: aluminium, iron, titanium, ... and some kind of ashes from botany or silt. At the end of 14th century, celadon glaze was made from white clay by Battrang craftmen. After that some kinds of other glazes were also created such as: ivory, sapphire blue, crackle, chocolate, etc.

2. Taking shape: The next step is the ceramic shape creation which requires alot of hard work and high skills. The stage includes kneading, polishing, shaping and printing. To shape by printing means that the craftmen will make a mould for a specific sample, then create a frame to produce this sample with big quantity. The other stage is to shape a ceramic product on the turning table. After being shaped, it will be decorated by painting, carving and melt glaze covering, then coverd by a layer of glaze and made dry for burning.

3. Piling up & burning. After being enameled & made dry, all the ceramic products are piled up and baked in the pottery-kiln. Ceramics piling has to follow strick rules to economize the kiln’s space. There are many kinds of traditional pottery-kiln respectively to different materials such as straw, firewood or coal. Each kiln often bakes less a thousand of ceramic products which are burned during 3 continuous days.

Nowadays, many precious ceramic products and unique glazes become world-famous fine art works such as celadon glaze ceramics in “Ly” and “Tran” Dynasty, crackled glaze and sapphire blue pottery in “Le- Trinh” Dynasty.
